We Can't Play Without Our Umpires

Umpires play a vital role in ensuring every netball match is played fairly, safely, and in the spirit of the game. Trained, accredited, and committed to high standards, Umpires also supports players of all ages and abilities across all competitions.

The Role of a Netball Umpire

Netball umpires are responsible for:

  • Applying Netball Rules consistently and fairly
  • Managing the game to ensure player safety
  • Encouraging good sportsmanship and respect on court 
  • Making confident decisions to keep the game flowing

Umpires are impartial officials who help create a positive experience for players, coaches, and spectators alike.

Accreditation & Training

All umpires are encouraged to work towards official accreditation through the recognised netball umpire pathway. This includes:

  • Completing the Rules of Netball exam achieve 70% of higher. A certificate must be sent through to start
  • Ongoing education and rule updates
  • On-court mentoring and performance feedback

Accreditation levels allow umpires to progress from junior and social competitions through to representative and high-level matches.

The process starts as a new umpire (Unbadged Umpire).
A mentor will guide you throughout allocated games to provide clarification on the rules and movement of the game.

  • Beginner Badge
  • Graduate Badge
  • Association Badge

Netball NSW Badges:

  • National C
  • National B
  • National A

Support & Development

We are committed to supporting our umpires by providing: – Mentoring from experienced and senior umpires – Regular coaching and development opportunities – Access to resources, workshops, and rule updates – A welcoming and inclusive umpiring community

New umpires will always be supported as they build confidence and experience.
